Diploma in Bharatanatyam Dance

Objective
The Diploma program seeks to instill both practical and theoretical knowledge in Bharatanatyam dance repertoire, building on the certificate program. Students will learn complex movement phrases in different rhythmic measures, to gain expertise and proficiency to perform challenging aspects in Bharatanatyam. Exploring the history and its evolution into its modern-day avatar, the student would gain understanding on the finer aspects of abhinaya while exploring the nayaka and the nayika bhedas.
Upon completion of the diploma program, the students will be able to:
- Have an experiential understanding of the practice of Bharatanatyam
- Have a developed competency in analyzing, evaluating, and interpreting various treatises that gave structure to the dance form
- Learn elements of choreography and intricacies of rhythm to ensure the translation of the knowledge gained into a performance setting
- Develop competencies in communicating effectively in delivering clearly organized and coherent presentations and performances that reflect informed understanding of the relevant contextual factors, including socio-historical influences and cultural traditions, perspectives, and behavioral patterns
- Intensive practical sessions led by renowned gurus in Bharatanatyam.
- In-depth study of dance literature, cultural context, and evolution of the art form.
- Emphasis on posture, grace, and inner awareness through traditional practice.
Requirements
Duration: One year (spread over 2 semesters)
Required Units: 15 credit units
Required Courses: Total of 5 courses (4 core mandatory and 1 elective)
Admission Prerequisites
- A high school or GED is required
- Practical dance training of at least 2 years

- DBN 301: History, Origin and development of Sadir to Bharatanatyam – 3 credit units.
- DBN 302: Nayaka and Nayika – A detailed study – 3 credit units
- DBN 303: Practicals – Few items of the margam – 3 credit units
- DBN 304: Bhakthi movement and it’s influence on Bharatanatyam – 3 credit units
DBN 401: Folk dance forms of Tamilnadu – 3 credit units

2. DBN 302: Nayaka and Nayika – A detailed study – 3 credit units
3. DBN 303: Practical- Few items of the Margam – 3 credit units

A Student enrolled in this Program could be evaluated using the following methods/metrics (Assessment could be a combination of a written and/or a practical performance demonstration) depending on the Course :
• Quiz : Two submissions during the Semester.
• Assignment : Two submissions during the Semester.
• Midterm Exam : During the mid-Semester Week.
• Final Exam : End of the Semester.
Students will be awarded a Diploma in Bharatanatyam, on their successful completion of all the required courses, with an overall combined GPA of 2.0 or higher, based on the evaluation weightage across the various methods/metrics.
