Certificate in Bharatanatyam Dance

Objective
The main objective of the Certificate Program is to initiate students to the sublime art form, the Indian classical dance Bharatanatyam. This program will cover the fundamentals of dance, both in theoretical and practical ways, that create and develop awareness and appreciation for the Bharatanatyam dance form. This is a beginner-friendly program that introduces students to the foundational techniques and expressive elements of Bharatanatyam
Upon completion of the certificate program, the students will be able to:
- Get an overview of the theoretical and practical aspects of the dance.
- Study the textual traditions of Bharatanatyam
- Understand the lineage and great traditions of the art form
- Get a comprehensive view of the classical dance form performed and practiced in India.
- Discover the aesthetic sensibility and appreciation of the art form.
- Learn core steps and movement patterns.
- Understand the history, purpose, and structure of Bharatanatyam.
- Learn under the mentorship of experienced dance faculty.
- Gain confidence through internal assessments and stage practice.
Requirements
Duration: 2 semesters
Required Units: 9 credit units
Required Courses: Total of 3 courses (2 core mandatory and 1 elective).
Admission Prerequisites
- A high school or GED is required
- Practical dance training of at least 2 years
Program Overview
- CBN 101: Introduction to Indian dance treatises in the context of Bharatanatyam: (Unit Value-3 credit units)
- CBN 102: Practical Dance: This would consist of learning combination Adavus, Kauthuvam and Alarippu (Unit Value – 3 credit units)
CBN 201: The evolution of various forms of Indian Classical Dance forms (Unit Value – 3 credit units)

A Student enrolled in this Program could be evaluated using the following methods/metrics (Assessment could be a combination of a written and/or a practical performance demonstration) depending on the Course :
- Quiz : Two submissions during the Semester.
- Assignment : Two submissions during the Semester.
- Final Exam : End of the Semester.
Students will be awarded a Certificate in Bharatanatyam, on their successful completion of all the required courses, with an overall combined GPA of 2.0 or higher, based on the evaluation weightage across the various methods/metrics.

Estimated Program Costs: $3,000.00 including Tuition ($2,700.00), Application Fee, Books, Registration Fees, etc.
