Objective
The Certificate Program focuses on the fundamental movements typical of the Kuchipudi technique. Through practice, students learn the characteristic dip-and-rise movements and the evolution these movements have undergone over the years, shaping the more popular style of Kuchipudi. The energy dynamics of the technique are systematically experienced and internalized. Students are introduced to the foundational texts of Natyasastra and Abhinaya Darpana. The esoteric aspects of the form, as understood by the torchbearers of Kuchipudi, are presented to the students in a separate course.
An introductory course designed to build a strong base in the graceful movements and expressive techniques of Kuchipudi.
- Learn foundational steps and rhythmic sequences

- Study the origin, evolution, and structure of Kuchipudi.
- Opportunities for practice-based assessments and group performances.
Requirements
Duration: 2 semesters
Required Courses: Total of 3 courses (2 core mandatory and 1 elective)
Required Units: 9 credit units
General Admission Requirements
- A high school diploma or GED is required
- Practical dance training of at least 2 years
Program Overview
- CKD 101: Glimpses of Indian dance treatises on Nrutya and Natya (Unit value – 3 credits)
- CKD 102: Practical Dance Number – (Unit value – 3 credits)
CKD 202: The spiritual aspects of Indian dance (Unit value – 3 credits)
A Student enrolled in this Program could be evaluated using the following methods/metrics (Assessment could be a combination of a written and/or a practical performance demonstration) depending on the Course :
- Quiz : Two submissions during the Semester.
- Assignment : Two submissions during the Semester.
- Final Exam : End of the Semester.
Students will be awarded a Certificate in Kuchipudi Dance, on the successful completion of all the required courses, with an overall combined GPA of 2.0 or higher, based on the evaluation weightage across the various Methods/Metrics.
- DKD 303: Practical aspects of Kuchipudi dance (Unit value – 3 credits)
- DKD 301: History, origin & development of Kuchipudi dance (Unit value – 3 credits)
- DKD 401: Practice of Talam (Unit value – 3 credits)
- DKD 302: Theatre art forms of Kuchipudi dance (Unit value – 3 credits)
- DKD 304: An overview of dance treatise: NrittaRatnavali, NatyaSastra and AbhinayaDarpanam (Unit value – 3 credits)
- DKD 402: Indigenous Dance Forms related to Kuchipudi dance (Unit value – 3 credits)
Tuition Fees
Estimated Program Costs: $3,000.00 including Tuition ($2,700.00), Application Fee, Books, Registration Fees, etc.
