Master of Arts in Bharatanatyam Dance

Objective
Bharatanatyam is one of the classical dance forms of India which has its roots in ancient culture and traditional practice. The dance form is known for its harmonious integrated philosophy, beauty, rhythm and joy. In the modern world it is emerging as an area of scholarly studies. Any Indian classical dance form cannot be studied in isolation. One has to study various other allied arts such as literature, music, sculpture and aesthetics. This Master of Arts program in Bharatanatyam is aimed to harness the potential of an aspiring danseuse to be able to integrate skill, talent, aesthetics, and abilities withacademic excellence.
The program content has been carved out with in-depth knowledge by experienced scholars artistes in the field, who will also handle the program. The gnawing gap between theoria (Sastra) and praxis (Prayoga) that is often seen in the art spectrum will certainly be filled due to the well-designed program structure. This program augments the existing capacity of the students in the field of choreography, performance, teaching, and opens avenues for further research. Serious and dedicated practitioners and enthusiastic aspirants with training in Bharatanatyam will emerge as holistic visionaries after the completion of this graduateprogram.
Upon the completion of the program, the students will have
- An experiential understanding of the practice of Bharatanatyam.
- Developed competency in analyzing, evaluating, and interpreting various treatises that gave structure to the dance form.
- Learned elements of choreography and intricacies of rhythm to ensure the translation of the knowledge gained into a performance setting.
- Developed competencies in communicating effectively in delivering clearly organized and coherent presentations and performances that reflect informed understanding of the relevant contextual factors, including socio-historical influences and cultural traditions, perspectives, and behavioral patterns.
- Demonstrated research skills at Master’s level by writing an original MA Thesis.

A Student enrolled in this Program could be evaluated using the following
methods/metrics (Assessment could be a combination of a written and/or a practical
performance demonstration) depending on the Course :
- Online Participation : Two Discussion submissions during the Semester.
- Assignment : Two submissions during the Semester.
- Midterm Exam : During the mid-Semester Week.
- Final Exam : End of the Semester.
- Thesis Draft : Five Thesis Draft submissions during the Semester.
- Final Thesis : Final Thesis submission at the end of the Semester.
Oral Defense & Practical Presentation : Present & defend the Thesis at the end of the Semester.
Students will be awarded Master of Arts Degree in Bharatanatyam, on their successful
completion of all the required courses, with an overall combined GPA of 3.0 or
higher, based on the evaluation weightage across the various methods/metrics.
Requirements
Duration: Two-year program (2 semesters in each year)
Required Units: Total of 30 credit units.
Required Courses: 6 core mandatory and 4 electives.
Admission Prerequisites:
- A Bachelor’s degree from an approved or accredited institution is required
- Practical dance training of at least 6 years

Estimated Program Costs: $9,900.00 including Tuition ($9,000.00), Application Fee, Books, Registration Fees, etc.
