Master of Arts in Sanskrit Language
Exploring the Richness of Telugu and Sanskrit Language & Literature
Objective
This program is aimed at providing the student with a comprehensive understanding of Sanskrit language and literature. The varied courses are aimed at offering expertise to the student in different genres of Sanskrit literature. It contains some of the well-known texts in each genre thereby providing a deep understanding of each genre. It also provides the necessary critical tools with which the student gauges the prominence and excellence in each of these texts. The program also provides insights into the cultural and social conditions of the past through times unknown to 13th century from the texts of various ages.
Upon the completion of the program, the students will have
- Developed a comprehensive understanding of all genres of Sanskrit literature
- Demonstrated competence to analyse, evaluate, and interpret ancient Sanskrit texts and other cultural products in clearly organized and coherent presentations in speech and writing in ways that reflect informed understanding of the relevant contextual factors, including socio-historical influences and cultural traditions, perspectives, and behavioral patterns.
- Cultivated a deep knowledge of the linguistics aspect of Sanskrit language to integrate it with other disciplines such as Computational Linguistics
- Developed a competency to communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms the ideas emerging out of the study.
- Demonstrated research skills at Master’s level by writing an original MA Thesis.

Duration: 2 years (spread over 4 Semesters)
Required Units: (30 credit units)
Required Courses: 10 Core Courses – 3 credit units each
General Admission Requirements
- As per the norms of The United States Foreign Service Rating System the language is taught in English/Sanskrit.

1. GSL 501: Sanskrit classical literature and prosody – 3 credit units.
(Raghuvaṃśa of Kālidāsa – second canto,
Kirātārjunīya of Bhāravi – third canto,
Śiśupālavadha of Māgha – fourteenth canto, and
Select metres from vṛttaratnākara of Kedārabhaṭṭa)
2. GSL 502: Sanskrit Grammar (Kārakavibhakti, Upapadavibhakti, and Lakārārthaprakaraṇa from Siddhāntakaumudī of Bhaṭṭoji Dīkṣita) – 3 credit units.
3. GSL 503: Purāṇic and Itihāsa Literature – 3 credit units.
(History of Purāṇic and Itihāsa Literature
Śrīmadbhāgavata – Govardhanoddharaṇa,
Śrīmadrāmāyaṇa – gaṅgāvataraṇa,
Mahābhārata – Aṣṭāvakropākhyāna)
4. GSL 504: Prose and Champu Literature – 3 credit units.
(History of Kavya Literature, and
selections from 7th and 8th cantoes of Harṣacarita of Bāṇa, and
Sundarakāṇḍa of Campūrāmāyaṇa of Bhoja)
5. GSL 505: Sanskrit Drama – 3 credit units.
(History of Drama Literature
Daśarūpaka of Dhanañjaya, and
Abhijñānaśākuntalam of Kālidāsa)
6. GSL 506: Vedic Literature – 3 credit units.
(History of Vedic literature,
Nirukta of Yāska – Chapter I
Hymns from Ṛgveda)
7. GSL 507: Advanced Sanskrit Grammar and Linguistics – 3 credit units.
(samāsaprakaraṇam from Siddhāntakaumudī of Bhaṭṭoji Dīkṣita, and Linguistics)
8. GSL 508: Sanskrit Poetics – 3 credit units.
(Kāvyaprakāśa of Mammaṭa –I, II, III, and IV Ullāsas, and Dhvanyāloka of Ānandavardhana I Uddyota.
9. GSL 509: Research Methods & Thesis Proposal – 3 credit units.
10. GSL 510: Thesis – 3 credit units.
A Student enrolled in this Program could be evaluated using the following methods/metrics (Assessment could be a combination of a written and/or a practical performance demonstration), depending on the Course :
Online Participation: Two Discussion submissions during the Semester.
Assignment: Two submissions during the Semester.
Midterm Exam: During the mid-Semester Week.
Final Exam: End of the Semester.
Thesis Draft: Five Thesis Draft submissions during the Semester.
Final Thesis: Final Thesis submission at the end of the Semester.
Oral Defense & Practical Presentation: Present & defend the Thesis at the end of the Semester.
Students will be awarded Master of Arts Degree in Sanskrit, on their successful completion of all the required courses, with an overall combined GPA of 3.0 or higher based on the evaluation weightage across the various methods/metrics.
